The drums and basses sounded like the Fantom S to me. The guitar sounds were the most improved to me. The pads and strings were ok and nothing gave me that wow feeling. My first impressions were that the sounds weren't the big improvement I hoped. I played the Fantom X yesterday for quite a while. What I like about this site is there are more opinions by different people. There seemed to be a coversation between two people talking about the Fantom X.
I followed the link to the Motificator site and read the comments. Sorry Im just writing as Im thinking!!!!!!:).
Perhaps might hold on to the Z1 also but get rid of the rack stuff? We'll see. At this moment in time, Im seriously considering putting most of my current synth hardware up for sale and getting a Motif ES with sample RAM and some PLG boards!!!!!!! I may hold onto my Triton Classic as a 2nd keyboard for gigs and as an alternative sound source. Within the next few weeks Im gonna check out the new Fantom and Triton and compare them with what's already out there and do a bit of a write up here. The supposed new slap bass was exactly as in my Triton Classic. Checking out the Triton Extreme vidio online, it to me sounded like my Triton classic with the exception of much improve piano sounds and a better sounding steel string guitar. Looks like the Fantom S is an absolute bargain then:). Yes I can assume that the X would not be that much different to the S with the exception of more polyphony and possibly some slightly improved sounds. There was a new guitar sound that was pretty good I remember but nothing else really stood out to me. There are some new sounds but they aren't as realistic sounding as other things out there. To answer the question about guitar, bass and drum sounds. The Fantom X seems like a smaller, weaker version in the same workstation family. It seems to me the Fantom X was released so Roland could have something to compete with the Yamaha Motif ES. Like other posters have already said it doesn't compare with the Motif ES in terms of being a whole new workstation. I don't think its worth it to shell out over 2 grand for what's essentially a fantom s with a few new features. If you didn't like the S, your not going to like the X. If you like the S you'll like the X since it adds to it. There were some new things but I have to agree it sounds, feels and plays like a fantom S. Not a whole lot of difference in my book. The similiarity of the sounds to the Fantom S was very apparent. I've played around with the Fantom X a few times. I owned the fantom S up until four months ago.

I'm now thinking I may upgrade to a Motif ES or Triton Studio since I feel they are both overall better workstations. I was very upset there weren't any modifications to the sequencer or sampler becuaseI had problems with both. I don't use the piano sound a whole lot but while I was playing the Fantom X over the past week, I had conversations with many other keyboardist in the music store and almost all of them weren't very impressed with the piano sound on the Fantom X. There are some sounds that are very good but on the whole I was greatly disappointed. Many of the sounds are identical or very close to Fantom S sounds and are either called something else or have slight modifications. I was happy to see the added polyphony and memory upgrade but I feel these should have been part of the Fantom S based upon what else was out there at the time of its release. I was considering the upgrade but I have to agree that in many ways this is a repackaged Fantom S. I have a Fantom S and have been playing the Fantom X now for a week.
